Notes: 13 May 1999
First and second places in all three divisions have now been settled as a result of fixtures played this week. In division 1 McClymont drew one fixture and won the other against University Eagles to take top spot with Eagles second. In division 2 Ellon Ospreys take the title with Seaton Seniors the runners-up. CS Mariners and Triangle Trio take the top spots in division 3.
The final show-down fixtures in division 1 proved to be a complete anti-climax as the University Eagles could only field makeshift teams on both occasions due to examinations. Before the first game started in the first encounter it was apparent that the title was to go to McClymont (Stuart Matthew, Michael Bruce, Nick Baxter) as the University team turned up with only two players (Ross Martin and Kenwin Liu). To have any chance of taking the title it was essential that Eagles played their strongest squad. With a 7-3 under their belt from this fixture the second encounter was a formality. Full credit must however be given to the exceptionally talented pool of young players who make up the McClymont team. In their first season in the top division Matthew, Bruce and Baxter ably supported by Nicol Craig have beaten the best Aberdeen has to offer.
In division 3 CS Mariners (Dave Fraser, Ian Davies, Gary Milwain, Derek Murison) finished very strongly and took the title at the expense of previous table toppers Triangle Trio. In their final two matches they beat Triangle Swifts 9-1 and McClymont Girls 8-2. Fraser won three matches out of three played; Davies five from six; Milwain four from six; and Murison three from three. In both fixtures Mariners won their doubles matches.
Mariners (Davies, Fraser, Milwain) also beat Triangle Swifts (George Keith, Derek Scorgie, Derek Milne) in the final of the Grampian Trophy to round off a fine season for the Civil Service Club. Both Davies and Fraser were undefeated with two wins each.
The AGM of the Association is to be held in the McClymont Hall on Thursday 20 May at 7.30 when all trophies will be presented for the season. Following the meeting wine, soft drinks and a finger buffet will be available for members. The Executive Committee are hopeful of representation from every team.
